Ranchi, April 1: As temperature continues to rise in the city, the facilities at Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ormanjhi have been extended for the animals and birds. At the same time, some changes have been made in their diet as well. The elephants have been provided a big tub of water in their cage by the Zoo authorities.
Similarly, the tiger and lion’s cages have been provided shade with straws and jute sacks. The inside cage has been equipped with a cooler. The moisture level has been maintained inside the cage specially during the day. The tub has been filled with water so that there is no scarcity of water.
The zoo director Jabbar Singh has said in a statement that animals, mainly carnivores, suffer the most from rising mercury. So, they have ensured proper summer diet, adequate water and shade for such animals.
The workers have been informed to take proper care of all the animals and birds in the zoo during summer. If there are any changes in the behavior of any animal they should inform the officials.
The diet of herbivorous animals has been changed with the scorching heat. The diet now includes cucumber and watermelon as well. To avoid dehydration, glucose is being mixed in their drinking water. On the other hand, the carnivorous animals are being provided less food as compared to winter.
The authorities have also given tips on how to take care of pet animals during summers. They have said that the animals should be kept in a cool place and not in the sun. They should be given a proper nutritious diet along with water to keep them hydrated.
The Biological Park has been trying for a long time to bring in Zebras and Giraffes in the zoo. But, this has not been possible due to some technical issues. However, there are possibilities that the officials will bring zebras soon whereas there is no update on giraffes yet.
