Kashmir: Chillai-Kalan, the Valley’s harshest 40-day winter phase, began with fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir and rain in the plains, bringing relief after a prolonged dry spell and raising hopes for a strong winter season.

Fresh Snowfall In Higher Reaches

Officials said Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district received around two inches of fresh snow, while Sonamarg on the Srinagar–Kargil highway witnessed continuous snowfall from early Sunday morning. Sadhna Top, connecting the Tangdhar sector with the rest of the Valley, recorded moderate snowfall with nearly six inches accumulating since Saturday night.

Rainfall Brings Relief To Plains

Light to moderate rainfall was reported overnight in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley, continuing intermittently through Sunday. The precipitation has eased the effects of a long dry spell that had contributed to rising cases of cough and cold, especially among children and the elderly.

Weather Outlook And Preparations

The meteorological department has forecast an increase in snowfall and rain across Kashmir over the next 48 hours. Authorities said preparations are in place to manage heavy snowfall, including arrangements for roads, power, water supply, health services and essential commodities, with administration reviews already conducted across vulnerable areas.

Boost For Air Quality And Tourism

Locals traditionally view snowfall on the first day of Chillai-Kalan as a good omen, signalling ample snow in the coming weeks. Besides improving air quality, the snowfall is expected to revive winter tourism, which had suffered last year due to an unusually dry winter. Chillai-Kalan will continue until January 30, followed by the milder Chillai-Khurd and Chillai-Bacha phases.
