Ranchi, Sept 12: The Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi in collaboration with the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) Jharkhand State Branch and IPS Specialty Section on Monday organised a programme marking the release of multi-lingual awareness material on suicide prevention commemorating the World Suicide Prevention Day.
Dayamani Barla, a prominent social activist and Dr Satyanarayan Munda, Ex Vice Chancellor, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi, were the chief guests of the programme.
The programme began with a welcome address by Prof (Dr) Basudeb Das, Director, CIP. He also read the awareness material about suicide prevention released by the International Association of Suicide Prevention (IASP).
This was followed by an address by the chief guests, who highlighted the growing suicide rates in the country and the state of Jharkhand. They also mentioned that the suicide rates were increasing among the tribal population throughout the country as the rising modernisation was decreasing the community cohesion and connectedness that existed before the advent of the modern 21st century.
Shortly after, the guests released the pamphlets translated into four regional languages: Jo, Khortha, Santhali and Nagpuri. They also read out the information printed in these languages. Arjun Kumar Minz, Research Scholar from SPMU, read the translations in Nagpuri, and Siddhant Odhar read the translations in Khortha.
