Ranchi, Feb. 18: One Altaaf Ansari (22), the cleaner of a Hyva truck is feared to have died after the vehicle fell into an abandoned stone quarry situated below 150 feet in Manjhladih village under Shikaripara police station of the district on Thursday.

Police said on the basis of an eyewitness account that the vehicle fell into one of the two abandoned quarries while approaching a narrow pathway situated on either side as the driver lost its control.

“Divers have been engaged to rescue the cleaner who was inside the vehicle when it fell into the quarry filled with water and believed to have been trapped inside,” the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Shikaripara police station Nawal Kishore Singh said, adding that the crane was also pressed into service to extricate the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the eyewitness account said that the Hyva truck flipped in the air once while finally falling into the quarry and that the driver could anyhow managed to jump out beforehand who has since been absconding.

“We are waiting for the relatives of the victim cleaner who hails from Hasapathar village under the same police station limits so as to have their say in the matter before instituting the FIR,” the OC said adding that investigation was on to ascertain whether the Hyva truck in question was laden with stones or not when it met with the accident.

This is, however, not an isolated instance of people falling prey to the prevailing lack of safety measures in stone quarries situated in Shikaripara police station area on a large scale mostly running illegally.
