New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday slammed the central government’s decision to send multi-party delegations abroad as part of Operation Sindoor, calling it a diversionary tactic disguised as diplomacy. The initiative, aimed at briefing international allies about India’s counter-terrorism stance, is being used to distract from unresolved domestic concerns, he claimed.
No special session, no real debate
Speaking to ANI, Ramesh said, “This is not a serious diplomatic outreach—this is a public relations exercise.” He criticised the government for not convening a special session of Parliament in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. “We have demanded an all-party meeting since April 22. Though two meetings were held, the Prime Minister did not attend either,” he said. Both Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge had formally written to the PM requesting a session to address the political and national security implications of the attack.
Strategic issues bypassed, says Congress
Ramesh also questioned the government’s silence on larger geopolitical challenges, including Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism and its growing strategic alignment with China. “These are not issues that should be bypassed with global delegations. They need to be discussed transparently within Parliament,” he said.
Caste census and foreign tours called distractions
He further alleged that the announcement of a caste census and international briefings were timed to draw public attention away from urgent national matters. “We still haven’t had a discussion on the China issue. Amid all this, they suddenly announced a caste census. It’s clearly a tactic to shift focus,” Ramesh remarked.
