Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader and former Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik’s residence was looted on Saturday night, with a miscreant fleeing with cash and gold ornaments worth ₹50 lakh.
Details of the Incident
The robbery occurred around 2.40 am when the family was asleep. CCTV footage revealed a masked man entering the house through a window on the second floor, where Patnaik’s elder son Devjyoti and his family reside. Devjyoti and his wife were away during the incident.
Patnaik stated that the thief broke into the cupboard in his son’s room, stealing gold ornaments and several thousand rupees in cash. The robber fled through the window after being detected by one of Devjyoti’s sons, who sensed movement upon returning home.
Police Investigation Underway
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar, Pinak Mishra, said fingerprints have been collected from the scene, and a special team has been formed to investigate. “It appears to be the work of a single individual, and we are confident of cracking the case soon,” he added.
Concerns Raised by Patnaik
Expressing his concerns about safety in Bhubaneswar, Patnaik criticized the city’s security measures. “Despite regular police patrolling, this robbery occurred. If such incidents can happen near my house, the safety of common citizens is highly questionable,” he remarked.
