New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday criticised the Modi government over US President Donald Trump’s latest remark teasing a “very big” India-US trade agreement, linking it to what he called the “abrupt” end of India’s anti-terror Operation Sindoor. The Congress claimed the ruling government is being caught off-guard by foreign announcements about deals of significant national consequence.
Operation Sindoor link and trade deal controversy
President Trump has repeatedly said he leveraged trade talks with India and Pakistan to push them to de-escalate after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. India has strongly denied any foreign mediation, asserting the ceasefire was a result of direct military channels. “After repeating 16 times that he used a trade deal to bring about a ceasefire, President Trump has now announced that such a deal is going to be signed in the next few days. He calls it a ‘very big deal’. It better be — given that it led to the abrupt end of Operation Sindoor,” Ramesh wrote on X.
Taking aim at the government, Ramesh added, “It is now becoming evident that India gets to know decisions of great importance from the White House in Washington DC.”
Jaishankar also targeted
In a separate swipe, Jairam Ramesh accused External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar of ignoring pressing diplomatic challenges. Referring to Jaishankar’s remarks on the 1975 Emergency, Ramesh said, “The EAM would be well advised to deal with the complete collapse of Indian diplomacy rather than digging up 50-year-old history.”
He added, “What I can tell the EAM is please tell us what President Trump is saying. What is this trade deal? Why is he claiming credit for the ceasefire?”
Trump’s big reveal at DC event
Speaking at a public event in Washington DC, President Trump said, “We just signed with China yesterday. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one. Where we’re going to open up India.” He claimed India would be “opened up” like China under his new deals.
