Last month, while the party faced turbulence in Punjab due to a leadership transition – after choosing Charanjit Channi, the state’s first Dalit Chief Minister, to replace Amarinder Singh, one of Punjab’s influential politicians – spokesperson Randeep Surjewala assured reporters that a CWC meeting will be held shortly.

This came when senior leader Kapil Sibal sent the Gandhis a new letter: “There is now no elected president in Congress. Who is answering the phone? We have no idea who makes the decisions in the party.”

Kapil Sibal also urged that the Congress Working Committee be called together. He stated that he does not believe the Congress will be damaged. It is up to the party to take the initiative. To defeat the government, entire party will have to band together. Without a commander, no struggle can take place. As a result, the working committee meeting should be held as soon as possible. Congress should hold organisational elections as well.

After Kapil Sibal, leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad too wrote a letter to Congress Working President Sonia Gandhi. He demanded that a meeting of the Congress Working Committee should be called at the earliest.
