New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed strict action against those involved in crimes against women, following widespread outrage over the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Addressing the public at the ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan’ in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, PM Modi underscored the importance of women’s safety, calling such crimes “unforgivable.”
“The security of women is paramount. I urge every state government to ensure that crimes against women do not go unpunished. Regardless of the identity of the perpetrator, they must be held accountable,” PM Modi stated during the event.
The horrific incident in Kolkata has ignited nationwide protests and intensified the political clash between West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with both parties trading blame over the deteriorating safety of women in the state.
PM Modi also highlighted his government’s efforts to strengthen laws to ensure harsher penalties for crimes against women. “We are committed to reinforcing legislation that will deliver stringent punishment to those who commit such heinous acts,” he asserted.
The ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan’ celebrates women self-help group (SHG) members who have achieved an annual household income of ₹1 lakh or more. This income is determined based on earnings across at least four agricultural seasons or business cycles, with a sustainable average monthly income exceeding ₹10,000.
During his speech, PM Modi pointed out the significant strides his government has made in supporting women over the past decade. “Before 2014, loans provided to women self-help groups amounted to less than ₹25,000 crore. In the last 10 years, we have increased that figure to ₹9 lakh crore,” he said.
PM Modi also used the occasion to bolster support for Maharashtra’s BJP-led Mahayuti government, urging the people to back the administration for sustained stability and progress. “Maharashtra is a beacon of a developed India. The state’s future depends on continued investment and job creation,” he concluded.
