CWG 2022: Indian long jumpers Murali Sreeshankar, Muhammed Anees qualify for final

New Delhi, Aug 2: At the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, Indian competitors Murali Sreeshankar and Muhammed Anees Yahiya qualified for the men’s long jump finals by finishing in the top three of their respective groups on Tuesday.

Sreeshankar cleared a height of 8.05 metres on his first try during the group A qualification round. The Indian only needed this to go to the final. No one could surpass him because he was at the top of the leaderboard from the beginning. Laquan Nairan of the Bahamas finished in second place with a best leap of 7.90 m. South African Jovan van Vuuren, who had the greatest jump of 7.87 m, came in third.

The top eight competitors in the group earned spots in the finals.

Anees got off to a strong start in the Group B qualification round by clearing 7.49 metres on his first attempt. In his second and third attempts, he made jumps of 7.68 metres and 7.49 metres, respectively, finishing with a best of 7.68 metres.

Next to Emanuel Archibald of Guyana, who made the greatest jump of 7.83 m on his first try, he placed third in his group. Australia’s Christopher Mitrevski, who executed the best leap of 7.76 m, finished in second place. As the eighth-best jumper, Anees finished and made it to the championship round. 12 athletes in all qualified for the championship.
