CWG 2022: Indian women’s team beat New Zealand to win bronze in hockey

New Delhi, Aug 7: India won bronze medal in women’s hockey at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday after defeating New Zealand 2-1 in a penalty shootout.

With 17 seconds left in the game, New Zealand had earlier tied the score, advancing the game to a penalty shootout. At one point earlier in the third quarter of the ongoing Commonwealth Games bronze-medal match versus New Zealand, India was up 1-0. Salima Tete scored the game’s first goal in the second quarter after the score after the first quarter remained 0-0.

In the third quarter, it appeared as though New Zealand had tied the score, but India elected for a referral, which paid off when the goal was overturned. Earlier, Savita Punia and her teammates had lost to Australia in the semifinals in a devastating way.
