CWG 2022: President, PM Modi laud Murali Sreeshankar for bringing India’s first-ever long jump medal

New Delhi, Aug 5: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday praised Murali Sreeshankar for silver in the long jump at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Thursday, saying it will serve as an inspiration to many Indians, especially the younger generation.

On Thursday, Sreeshankar brought India’s first-ever long jump medal in CWG.

“Congratulations to Sreeshankar for winning silver in long jump at #CommonweathGames. Your long leap has brought India’s first ever medal for this event in Commonwealth Games. This pathbreaking achievement will inspire countless Indians, especially the youth,” President Murmu tweeted.

Murali Sreeshankar’s silver-medal performance in the men’s long jump final at the Commonwealth Games was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘special’ triumph. The Prime Minister stated that ‘his success augurs well for the future of Indian athletics’ in a tweet today.

“M. Sreeshankar’s Silver medal at the CWG is a special one. It is after decades that India has won a medal in Men’s long jump at the CWG. His performance augurs well for the future of Indian athletics. Congratulations to him. May he keep excelling in the times to come,” he said in a tweet.

With a distance of 8.08 metres, Sreeshankar’s historic silver medal victory makes him the first male Indian athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in the long jump.

At Birmingham 2022, Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas won the gold medal, and Jovan van Vuuren of South Africa won the bronze.
