New Delhi, Aug 4: Tejaswin Shankar, Indian athlete made his nation proud on Wednesday by winning the bronze medal in the men’s high jump final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham with a height of 2.22 metres.

Shankar finished in a tie for first place in the men’s high jump event with former world and CWG champion Donald Thomas of the Bahamas, but the Indian athlete prevailed because he committed less fouls.

On countback, the holder of the national record passed 2.22 metres to place third. Joel Clarke-Khan of England and Donald Thomas of the Bahamas also cleared 2.22 metres, however it took them both more than one effort, whereas Shankar only needed one.

In two tries, Shankar (23) was unable to soar higher than 2.25 metres. In his third and last effort, he attempted to win a silver medal by going for 2.28m, but he was unsuccessful. Before Shankar, Bhim Singh cleared 2.06m in the 1970 edition in Edinburgh to take the top spot for India in the men’s high jump category at the CWG.

With a best leap of 2.24m, Shankar placed sixth in the 2018 Gold Coast competition. Shankar, whose inclusion in the Indian athletics team was mandated by the Delhi High Court, has a season-best height of 2.27 metres and a personal-best height of 2.29 metres.
