Puducherry: In response to heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Fengal, the Puducherry government has declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges on Tuesday, December 3, according to Education Minister A Namachivayam.

Relief Measures for Affected Residents

Chief Minister N Rangaswamy announced a relief package of ₹5,000 for all ration cardholders impacted by the cyclone. Speaking to reporters, he stated, “Cyclone Fengal brought 48% unexpected rainfall to Puducherry. To assist affected families, the government will provide ₹5,000 to each ration cardholder.”

Additionally, farmers whose crops have been damaged will receive ₹30,000 per hectare. Nearly 10,000 hectares of agricultural land in Puducherry have suffered damage due to heavy rainfall.

Relief for Fishermen

The cyclone also caused significant damage to the fishing community, with 50 boats destroyed. The government has allocated ₹10,000 per boat for repairs to help fishermen resume their livelihoods.

Widespread Flooding and Rescue Operations

Cyclone Fengal has left parts of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu severely affected by extreme rainfall. Coastal regions, including the Sankaraparani River area, witnessed severe flooding. Over 200 homes in NR Nagar were inundated, leaving residents stranded.

Rescue operations led by the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are underway. Teams have deployed boats to evacuate residents from flooded areas and ensure their safety.
