Singapore: Indian chess sensation D Gukesh secured the World Chess Championship title on Thursday, defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in a dramatic final classical game in Singapore. At 18, Gukesh became the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, surpassing the record set by Russia’s Garry Kasparov, who claimed the title at 22.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced the milestone, hailing Gukesh as “the youngest World Champion in history.” Gukesh’s win also makes him the second Indian to hold this prestigious title, following in the footsteps of five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand.
