Thiruvananthapuram, March 26: Shashi Tharoor, a senior member of the Congress on Sunday questioned whether it was beneficial for this nation’s democracy when the main opposition leader is not permitted to speak in Parliament.

He said, “Is it good for our democracy when the principal opposition leader is not allowed to raise his voice in parliament where we have a PM who speaks to the world about India as the mother of democracy? Is this good for our country”? He further added, “Let us forget party politics. What is good for our country? This is damaging to India. It is not damaging to Rahul Gandhi.”

When questioned about the ongoing Sankalp Satyagraha by Congress, Tharoor responded, “This (Satyagraha) is not just about congress party or Rahul Gandhi, this is about Indian democracy”.

Sankalp Satyagraha is being held by the Congress at Raj Ghat. On Sunday, Priyanka Gandhi came to Raj Ghat for the demonstration. Together with other party leaders, the protest included Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the party’s general secretary KC Venugopal, and several other party officials.

Rahul Gandhi was stripped of his right to serve in the Lok Sabha on Friday, just one day after a Surat court gave him a two-year prison term in a defamation case brought against him because of his remark about the “Modi surname.”

The decision was made in response to his statement during a Lok Sabha election rally in Kolar, Karnataka, in April 2019, in which he said, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

Gandhi was granted bail by the court, and the punishment was postponed for 30 days so that he may appeal to higher courts. Gandhi criticised the BJP after being found guilty in the defamation case and being removed from the Lok Sabha.

Gandhi stated during a press conference that he is not afraid of going to prison and that the purpose of his removal from Parliament was to divert attention away from the Adani situation.
