New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed yoga guru Ramdev to retract his public statements claiming that ‘Coronil’ is a cure for Covid-19 within three days. This order follows Ramdev’s controversial remarks which positioned ‘Coronil’ not merely as an immunity booster but as a definitive cure for the virus.

Justice Anup Bhambhani, who reserved the order on May 21 after hearing arguments from both sides, issued the directive on Monday.

In 2021, various doctors’ associations filed a lawsuit against Ramdev, his aide Acharya Balkrishna, and Patanjali Ayurveda. The lawsuit alleged that Ramdev made unsubstantiated claims about ‘Coronil’ curing Covid-19, despite the drug only being licensed as an immunity booster.

The plaintiffs sought a court order to prevent Ramdev and his associates from making further similar claims. They accused Ramdev of misleading the public and undermining the efficacy of allopathic treatments and Covid-19 vaccines as part of a marketing strategy to boost sales of ‘Coronil’.

The high court, acknowledging the gravity of the allegations, had previously issued summons to Ramdev and others on October 27, 2021. The court noted that the case was not frivolous and warranted judicial scrutiny.

On July 12, the administration of Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh banned the sale of 14 Ayurvedic medicines manufactured by Divya Pharmacy and Patanjali Ayurveda Limited, further highlighting the ongoing concerns regarding the claims made by Ramdev.

The Supreme Court also directed Patanjali Ayurved Ltd on July 9 to file an affidavit confirming whether advertisements for these 14 products, whose manufacturing licenses were initially suspended but later restored, have been withdrawn.
