New Delhi, Sept 5: Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, and VK Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, today officially flagged off 400 new electric buses in Delhi as part of a commitment toward environmentally friendly and sustainable urban transportation.

Delhi now has 800 electric buses in total, making it the Indian city with the most number of electric buses.

A total of 1,500 electric buses have been ordered by the Delhi government, 921 of which have received financial assistance through the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) program.

The 800 electric buses should reduce annual CO2 emissions by about 45,000 tons, making Delhi a greener and cleaner city. These buses are anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions by a combined 5.4 lakh tonnes throughout their 12-year lifespan.

Delhi plans to add 1,900 electric buses to its fleet by the end of 2023, making it one of the cities with the most electric buses worldwide. Delhi expects to operate 10,480 buses in total by 2025, with 8,280 of them being electric, or 80% of the fleet.

With a lifetime savings of 5.6 million tonnes over 12 years, this transformation is anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions by 4.67 lakh tonnes yearly.

70 depots are being converted to handle more than 8,000 electric buses by 2025 as part of this extensive electrification of the bus fleet.

Mayapuri, Rohini 1, Nehru Place, Rajghat, Mundela Kalan, Shastri Park, and Majlis Park are the eight fully electrified and operational depots.

Eight depots are currently fully electrified and in use, while more are being built. By allocating more than Rs 1,500 crores for depot electrification, the Delhi government has shown that it is committed to long-term sustainable urban transportation.
