New Delhi, Jan 6: A huge ruckus erupted at Civic Centre on Friday, before the commencement of voting for the Delhi Mayor elections, regarding the swearing-in of nominated councillors.

Members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could be seen demonstrating and shouting in the middle of the civic building.

When Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s interim Speaker Satya Sharma began swearing in the nominees, protest broke out.

The elected members ought to have taken the oath of office before the nominees, according to AAP members. The recent appointments made by Saxena caused the power struggle between the AAP and the Lieutenant Governor, who represents the Centre in Delhi, to rapidly worsen.

Following the unification of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) last year, Delhi will soon elect its first single mayor in ten years. Two candidates have been put out by the Aam Aadmi Party, which won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections with 134 seats: Shelly Oberoi and Ashu Thakur. The BJP’s candidate for mayor is Rekha Gupta, a three-term councilwoman representing Shalimar Bagh. Aaley Mohammad Iqbal and Jalaj Kumar, who are competing against Ram Nagar councillor Kamal Bagri for the position of deputy mayor, have been nominated by the AAP.

In the MCD elections on December 4, the AAP toppled the Bharatiya Janata Party’s 15-year rule.
