New Delhi: Protests broke out outside the Bangladesh High Commission in the national capital after the lynching of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh, with demonstrators demanding justice and protection for minorities amid heavy security deployment.
Protest Turns Tense Outside High Commission
Members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal led the protest, holding banners and placards and raising slogans against alleged atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh. Tensions escalated when protesters pushed barricades, leading to clashes with police. Law enforcement resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd after multiple layers of barricades were breached.
Slogans, Detentions And Police Action
Protesters shouted slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and demanded accountability from Bangladeshi authorities. Some demonstrators burned effigies of Bangladesh’s interim chief Muhammad Yunus. Police detained several protesters, restored barricades, and secured the area with multi-layered security involving police and paramilitary forces.
Background Of The Lynching Case
The protest followed the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, who was lynched and his body set on fire by a mob in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, on December 18 over alleged blasphemy. The incident triggered widespread outrage, and Bangladeshi authorities have arrested at least 12 people in connection with the crime.
Diplomatic Row Between India And Bangladesh
Earlier, Bangladesh summoned the Indian High Commissioner, expressing concern over protests and vandalism at its diplomatic facilities in India. Dhaka urged New Delhi to ensure the safety of its missions, while India maintained that security was adequate and the protest posed no threat. The issue has heightened diplomatic sensitivity amid international concern over minority safety in Bangladesh.
