New Delhi, June 17: Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief, has been given one-month parole by Haryana’s BJP-led government. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is now serving a life sentence in a Haryana jail after being convicted of two rape crimes in 2017. In 2002, he was also found guilty of the murder of his manager.
Despite being given parole for the first time since his conviction, Dera founder Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been granted furlough four times, the most recent being in February, when he was granted three weeks’ vacation.
Notably, a furlough is a short-term temporary release of prisoners from jail, whereas parole refers to the release of a prisoner either temporarily for a specified purpose or totally before the end of a sentence on the promise of good behaviour.
The sect’s leader is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for rapping two female members at his ashram in Sirsa, where the dera is based. In August 2017, he was found guilty by a special CBI court in Panchkula.
Last year, the Dera sect leader and four others were found guilty of plotting to assassinate Dera boss Ranjit Singh in 2002. Ram Rahim and three others were convicted in 2019 for the 2002 murder of a journalist.
According to insiders, the Dera chief would most likely visit Dera Sacha Sauda Ashram in Barnawa, Uttar Pradesh’s Bhagpat district.
