Dhanbad, Feb 17: A few constituent colleges of Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) Dhanbad have been sitting on the 2nd Cycle of NAAC for years despite having been entitled to apply for the same.
The two constituent colleges, SSLNT Women’s College and Sindri College Sindri, have a long due of applying for the 2nd Cycle of NAAC but both the institutions have yet to initiate any step in this regard.
SSLNT Women’s College got 1st NAAC grading in 2016 and it became entitled for applying for 2nd Cycle in 2021. The first Cycle of Sindri College Sindri was held in 2017 when Dr Kamta Singh was the principal. Its 2nd cycle became due in 2022.
NAAC grading of college is done every five years.
A senior professor of the university said that the UGC gives grants to colleges on basis of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grading.
The college/university has to submit ‘A self Study Report (SSR) for NAAC’s physical inspection. After inspection, the NAAC gives grading.
Since colleges of BBMKU have not sent SSR, an inspection of NAAC is pending.
BBMKU has 11 constituent colleges, including a minority-run one in Dhanbad and Bokaro districts but only three institutions RSP College Jharia, Gurunanak College and PK Roy Memorial have completed NAAC 2nd Cycle so far.
The ten constituent colleges out of 11 have a grade ‘B’ while BSK College Maithon has grade ‘C’.
RSP College Jharia was the first institution in Dhanbad to get NAAC grading in 2007. Prof DK Verma was the principal and he ensured the 2nd Cycle in 2015. PK Roy Memorial College got its first Cycle in 2014 and 2nd in 2021.
The Gurunank College got the first Cycle in January 2015 and principal Prof P Shekhar before his retirement conducted 2nd Cycle in October 2021.
The BSK College Maithom got 1st Cycle in June 2022 and principal Dr KK Singh said his institution got a grade ‘C’.
RS More College Govindpur also got 1st Cycle in 2022 and got a grade ‘B’. Besides it, a university official said that KB College Bermo (2018-19), Chas College Chas (2018-19) and Bokaro Steel City College (2019-20) and Katras College conducted 1st Cycle and got a grade’ B’.
BBMKU, which became a new university in 2017 after carving out colleges from Vinoba Bhave University Hazaribag, has also had to get NAAC grading.
Interestingly university authorities also do not look interested in getting NAAC grading of colleges.
“As per the UGC guidelines and norms, a new university/institution can apply for NAAC assessment and accreditation only after six years of existence. BBMKU would be entitled to apply only on November 23,” said Prof P Shekhar, a member of the NAAC Peer team who has so far assessed 21 colleges of Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Haryana and Karnataka.
