Dhanbad, Sept 13: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) cell of the Dhanbad health department for the first time held a workshop to sensitize schools’, colleges’  and coaching institutions’ students against suicide.

Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr CP Pratapan said that the main aim of this programme was to sensitize students and stop them from committing suicide.

“Lots of reasons can be behind committing suicide such as psychological, social, financial, family crisis and individual problems. In such situations one should learn from their mistakes in life and should keep a positive approach to move up further”, said CS Dr Pratapan while addressing the students.

NCD cell district nodal officer Dr Manju Das, on the occasion, while addressing the programme pointed out that suicide is a social health problem which can be solved and stopped through social support and with availability of mental health services.

“It is an unfortunate incident which badly impacts families and society. So, it is need of the hour in the society to launch united efforts for awareness among students to check it,” said Dr Das. She further added that we can stop the students who harbour such mentally, by consoling them.

A health department official said that on the theme of  ‘Creative Hope Through Action’ the programme was organized to mark ‘ World Suicide Prevention Day’. The programme of sensitization would be carried out week-long with students of different schools, colleges and coaching institutions.

Shubhankar Maitra, Umashankar Mandal and Laldev Rajak also addressed the workshop.

In Dhanbad, the suicide of students has emerged as a  major problem. In July, two girl students (one each from school and college) committed suicide in the Tetulmari and  Pathardih areas of the district.
