The body has been identified as Saleha Bibi, wife of Rashid resident of Shyampur village. Despite heavy protest from family members, police sent the body in an ambulance for post-mortem.
The incident happened on Thursday evening (February 24) when the boat carrying over a dozen people was going to Birgao of Jamtara from Barbendia Ghat of Nirsa (Dhanbad). It capsized in the Barakar river due to a storm. Several persons including women and children are said missing after the incident.
Jamtara MLA Dr. Irfan Ansari said that the state government will pay a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family members of each victim of the tragedy.
“Chief minister Hemant Soren has taken the tragedy seriously and would make an aerial survey of the spot when the incident occurred,” he said.
He said that the DVC chairman and D RM have also offered help in the rescue operation. He stated that the tragedy happened in his constituency and he is ready to extend all types of help to victims’ families but would not allow any party to do politics on it.
“ Rather than helping the victim’s family, BJP leaders are doing politics on tragedy,” he charged.
