Dhanbad, Jan 6: District police on Thursday nabbed two extortionists within 72 hours of demanding extortion from a businessman in Govindpur through a phone call.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Amar Kumar Pandey told media persons that the arrested extortionists have been identified as Subhan Ansari and Saddam Hussain of Govindpur. Police recovered the SIM card and mobile set which were used by them for the call.
DSP Pandey said that both the extortionists had demanded Rs. 5 lakh as extortion from Shakti Cement shop owner Rajesh Agrawal from two different numbers on January 3.
An FIR under IPC Section 385, 387 and 506 was lodged in the Govindpur police station on January 3 against unidentified criminals. Taking the extortion call seriously, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjiv Kumar set up a special squad under DSP Amar Kumar Pandey.
On getting a tip-off that local criminals of Govindpur were involved in the extortion demand, the special police squad raided the hideout of Subhan Ansari and Saddam Hussain the previous night.
The arrested criminals admitted their involvement in the crime and handed over the phone through which extortion was demanded.
“During the interrogation of the arrested persons, involvement of more criminals has been found. Raids are being conducted to nab them,” said the DSP.
This was the first time in New Year that criminals demanded extortion from a businessman in Dhanbad and were arrested duly. Last year, four posh businessmen had received extortion calls from criminals. Police officials said that arresting these criminals would help in nabbing others involved in this crime.
