Dhanbad, Feb 23: Research scholars and students of top technical and management institutions across the country learnt nuances of research communication and ethical values in the workshop of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad on Stochastic Modelling Technique.
Prof Rajni Singh, dean (media and branding) IIT ISM while addressing the first session of the workshop on the third day highlighted the significance of effective communication and elaborated on four basic premises of writing and tactics structuring.
“We should go for readerly writing instead of writerly writing,” said Prof Singh.
Prof Singh, a PhD degree holder in English from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), during her 90-minute interactive session exhorted the participants to pay attention to the main elements of writing including structure, style and content.
Prof Rajni Singh’s research recommendations about the transgender community have been implemented by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment to provide a better working environment for them.
Prof Singh, who is the first Women Dean of IIT (ISM), while explaining the structuring of communication messages said, “One must clarify the thought and purpose of writing and also identify the key points, facts and themes before writing.”
She also laid emphasis on the importance of re-writing and said, “It has the power to clarify the ideas”.
Elaborating on the different aspects of content for writing Prof Singh one must have a clear objective and then develop arguments in a logical way. She also explained some redundant words like, future plans, absolutely essential, small in size, refer back, and collaborate together.
Dr U Dinesh Kumar, chair professor of IIT Bangalore, in his keynote address on the third day, which was delivered online, spoke on Markov Decision Process (MDP) with business applications while Rajeeva Karandikar, former director of CMI Chennai talked about Applications of Statistical Ideas to real-world scenarios.
Prof Bishwajit Mahanty, professor in the department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at IIT Kharagpur gave a detailed description of the dynamic modelling of Stochastic Systems.
