Dhanbad, Jan 17: Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) principal Dr Jyotiranjan Prasad has banned the annual cricket tournament of the institution following a clash between MBBS students of the 2018 and 2019 batches after the match.

Notably, under the annual festival ‘Antraagni’ organised by the medical college, a cricket match was held between students of the 2018 and 2019 batches on Monday. Players of both the batches engaged in a heated discussion on the ground over a decision during the match. However, it was solved under sportsman spirit duly.

However, the sources in the medical college said that after the match in the evening, some students as well as players of both the batches once again began an argument near hostels over match results and even involved nearby boys of hostel no 1 in a scuffle.

Furthermore, tensions prevailed on the campus following the scuffle. Principal Dr Jyotiranjan was duly informed. Taking the matter seriously, the principal then banned the matches of the tournament till further order after holding meetings with all concerned teachers, hostels in charge and MBBS students on Tuesday.

“For the time being cricket matches have been banned till the situation of the campus normalises. Though it was a minor incident, discipline must be maintained on and off the ground after the match,” he said.

Interestingly principal Dr Jyotiranjan Prasad, who had inaugurated the cricket tournament for MBBS students on January 5, had directed the participants to play with sportsman spirit and maintain discipline.

Dr CS Suman, the sports in-charge of the medical college said that no major incident had happened that would need any comment over it.

However, the hostel in-charge Prof (Dr) Anil Kumar said that a minor incident between some players over the match was part of the game. “However, we would request the principal to allow the tournament to continue in the interest of the institution as well as students,” he said.

‘Antraagni’, the major annual fest of SNMMCH students has over a dozen sports and cultural events apart from the cricket match. The sports event is set to conclude on Saraswati Puja.
