Dhanbad, Sept 30: Unidentified killers shot dead a soft drink agency owner named Jyoti Ranjan at his Sunshine County Colony gate in Kharni near National Highway-2 under Rajganj police station around 20 km away from district headquarters on Thursday evening.

The police said the incident occurred around 7.30 pm on Thursday. Jyoti Ranjan was returning by car along with his wife and son from the market. Having found the gate of the colony unexpectedly closed, his wife Deepa came out of the car and went to open it.

In the meantime, all of sudden two killers came close to the car and fired two bullets at Jyoti Ranjan who was sitting in the driving seat. The assailants also fired at his wife at the colony gate but missed the target. Bullets hit Jyoti Ranjan on the head and neck. His son Bittu, who was sitting in the back seat of the car, said the killers fled after ensuring Jyoti Ranjan was dead.

The colony gate is merely around 500 yards away from Kolkata-Delhi National Highway-2. Deepa raised an alarm after the incident but taking advantage of the dark, the killers fled away.

Jyoti Ranjan was immediately rushed to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him brought dead.

On receiving the information, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Reeshma Ramesan and officials of Rajganj and Barbadda police stations also reached the spot and began an investigation.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjiv Kumar told media persons that in the initial investigation, it surfaced that Jyoti Ranjan had a dispute with someone. “Police are identifying whom he had a row with. The killers will be arrested soon,” he said.

However, the father of the deceased, Anil Kumar, ruled out that his son had any row with any person. “I have a soft drink agency in Barbadda and Jyoti Ranjan was helping in operating the business,” he said. The family had shifted to the posh Sunshine County Colony 10 months ago (December 2021). Jyoti Ranjan was associated with the real estate business.
