Dhanbad March 17: The professors and senior doctors at Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad offered rich tribute to Dr Jogendra Singh, former Head of the Surgery Department and one of the founders of the institution who passed away on Sunday.

Along with serving as the HoD of the PMCH’s surgery department, Dr Singh also held the position of superintendent at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur. He was also the founder and chairman of Namdhari Hospital and Research Centre, Dhanbad.

A condolence meeting was organised at the Lecture Theatre Hall of the SNMMCH. The HODs of several faculties remembered late Dr Jogendra Singh’s contributions to the organisation and paid tributes. They also offered tribute to Dr C. S. Prasad, a physician.

When remembering Dr Singh’s contributions to the medical field, SNMMCH Superintendent Dr AK Barnbal (who is also the head of the surgery department) said that Dr Singh demonstrated how a person can rise to a position of a top surgeon in the nation despite overcoming hardships since childhood, including the trauma of witnessing the country’s partition.

Dr UK Ojha, HoD of the college’s medicine department, spoke about the career accomplishments of Dr CS Prasad and Dr Singh and noted how difficult it is to uphold their legacy in the medical industry.

Prof ( Dr ) Kameswar Biswas, who worked with Dr Yogender Singh,  said that he was not only a distinguished surgeon but also a supporter of young physicians and was focused on uplifting the junior physicians in the medical community.

He was one of the founding members of the Patliputra Medical Colleges Hospital (PMCH) in Dhanbad and served as a teacher from 1968–1969 when the university was still a private one. It’s interesting that Dr Singh started working at PMCH (now SNMMCH) as a teacher in the anatomy department before switching to surgery, said Dr Kameswar Biswas.

In the SNMMCH, Dr Singh was the most well-liked teacher. A cricket tournament for MBBS students used to be held in medical colleges for years, even after he retired.  The health minister used to inaugurate the tournament.

Principal in-charge Dr BC Bannerjee presided over the condolence meeting. Dr DP Bhushan ( HoD ortho),  Dr CD Ram (HoD anaesthesia), and other faculty and doctors were also present.
