Jamshedpur, June 27: A bird watching programme was organised by the Corporate Sustainability Department, Tata Steel in association with Tata Steel Zoological Park, at the foothills of Dalma on Sunday.

This event aligned with Sustainability Month celebrations in Tata Steel and aimed to build a common understanding of the term ‘sustainability’ amongst all employees and stakeholders of Tata Group companies.

It also helped to make changes in habits required for a sustainable future. The theme of this year was ‘BeEarthSmart–Learn, Live, Lead.’

Dimna, 13 km from Jamshedpur is close to the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. The area is marked by an artificial lake and is located at the foothills of the Dalma mountain range famous for its serenity and pleasant greenery.

Forests are characterised by shed leaves in the summer and attain their full bloom with the onset of monsoon.

The forest falls under the ‘Dry Peninsular Sal’ and ‘Northern Dry Mixed Deciduous Forest’ categories.

About 100 wildlife enthusiasts participated. The briefing was held in two sessions. The first session was where the participants observed the birds by randomly tracking them on the foothill of 2 Km.

The second session was at Tata Steel Management Development Centre (TMDC) to share the experience and findings.

Different teams were named as Hornbill, Oriole, Tree Pie, Kingfisher, Pitta, Stork and Woodpecker. All participants were assigned the task to identify and record birds in their datasheet cum reference sheet.

A consolidated 48 bird species were identified during the sessions by all participants. The participants comprised Tata Steel employees, teachers, scientists and volunteers. Forest guards from the Jamshedpur forest division also attended.
