New Delhi, July 22: As the Opposition parties intensified their attacks on the Centre over rising prices, the GST on daily necessities, and the misuse of central agencies, the Lok Sabha was postponed twice, first until noon and then till 2 pm.
The Rajya Sabha, meantime, resumed at 12 pm. The government has been accused by the opposition of avoiding a discussion of important problems, which they allege demonstrates the ‘obstinacy’ of the Modi administration.
Since the start of the monsoon session, there have been constant adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Today marked the fifth day in a row during the current session when both Houses dispersed without accomplishing anything. There have been at least seven adjournment motion notices filed in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha regarding unemployment and other issues.
The administration declared on Wednesday that it is prepared for a debate on price increases in Parliament after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recovers from COVID-19, as the Opposition has refused to budge from its position.
The Monsoon Session of this year is extremely significant because it will see the election of the President and Vice-President.
Droupadi Murmu, a candidate for the NDA, will take office as India’s first tribal president after yesterday’s announcement of the election results. Elections for the vice presidency will be held on August 6.
Parliament’s Monsoon Session began on July 18 and will last till August 12. The Session will consist of 18 sittings.
