Jamshedpur, May 27: Drinking water crisis has gripped the Ghaghidih central jail, causing the inmates to suffer immensely.
About 1,900 inmates, including undertrial prisoners are doing their daily chores with scanty water that is supplied through tankers.
Significantly, as the central jail authority seems to be not serious enough with the drinking water problem, some benevolent people had to chip in to resolve the nagging problem while the region is reeling under a sizzling temperature.
According to sources, there were four deep borewells on the premises of the central jail. Two of the four borewells are lying defunct for the past three years, incidentally two remaining borewells also got defunct after the motors went out of order a week ago.
A central jail staff while talking to lagatar24.com said motors of the two functional deep borewells went out of order due to depleting underground water level.
As a result of the prevailing situation, the prisoners as well as undertrial prisoners have to skip the regular bathing and washing. Most of the inmates are languishing without drinking water.
As the information about the water crisis trickled out of the prison, a BJP leader Rajkumar Singh swung into action and started providing water tankers to the central jail on his own.
It was after the BJP leader took initiative to supply water tankers into the jail that the central jail authority budged to mend the two damaged deep borewells.
Superintendent, Ghaghidih central jail, Narendra Singh confirmed about the drinking water crisis in the central jail.
“The water problem was being met by the water tankers supplied from outside. But damaged motors of two functional deep borewells have already been mended and the borewells are likely to be get functional again soon, ” claimed the central jail superintendent while talking to lagatar24.com.
