Gaza Strip: Israeli military officials have released drone footage capturing the final moments of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in a military operation on Thursday. The footage shows Sinwar sitting on a sofa in a heavily damaged building, covered in dust and appearing wounded, with his face obscured by a scarf.
According to Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari, Sinwar was initially identified as a fighter, but further confirmation through fingerprints, dental records, and DNA testing revealed his identity. Sinwar, responsible for leading Hamas since 2017 and masterminding the October 2023 attacks on Israel, was killed in a targeted shelling attack.
In the footage, Sinwar is seen throwing an object towards an approaching Israeli drone, shortly before the building he was hiding in was shelled, causing its collapse. The operation that led to his death began with Israeli infantry engaging in a gunfight with suspected militants, which led to Sinwar’s eventual retreat and death.
Hamas has yet to comment on the killing of Sinwar. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Sinwar’s death, stating it was part of Israel’s continued mission to bring justice for the October attacks and ensure the safe release of hostages held by Hamas.
