Dhanbad, April 15: An alleged drug addict stabbed a woman at Dhanbad railway station portico in a scuffle and injured her badly, the GRP officials said.
Amarjit Prasad, Dhanbad Railway Police station in charge, said that the incident occurred around 8.15 p.m on Thursday. The injured woman, identified as Juhi Khatoon, resident of Jharia Indira Chowk was admitted to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) immediately at night while the assaulter Viswan Bhuyan was sent to jail today.
An eyewitness said both first engaged in a heated argument which turned into a feisty- fight among them. In the meantime, Viswa Bhuyan dragged out a knife and hit the woman twice. Since hundreds of passengers along with family members were waiting on the lawn of the portico, commotion prevailed there.
The woman received injuries to her hands and back. Doctors at SNMMCH said he was out of danger and would be released soon.
After stabbing the woman, the assaulter tried to escape from the spot but fell to the ground due to an intoxication condition. The GRP reached the spot soon after and arrested him. Viswa Bhuyan is a resident of Chatra district. He works on a daily wage during the day and takes shelter at Dhanbad railway station at night.
The GRP official said the injured woman has a criminal background and had been in jail for theft of railway copper on January 30. “Both knew each other and it is being investigated why they engaged in a scuffle at the railway portico,” said the GRP in-charge.
The official said that it was an accidental incident and there were no security lapses from passengers there. As per the railway’s official record per day 22,000 to 24,000 thousand footfall at Dhanbad railway station.
