Dumka, Jan 4: Police have recovered huge quantities of banned drugs including cough syrups of different brands and Alprazolam tablets from the house of one Rajesh Rai at Harnakundi area under Mufassil police station of Dumka district.
DSP Noor Mustafa said that the raid was conducted at Rai’s house last evening when nearly 5,000 bottles of different brands of cough syrup including Onarex, Dilex, Forex, Eskuf, Cosas- DX, Wings and Codectus and over 5,000 pieces of Alprazolam tablets were recovered.
“All these drugs are meant for sale and consumption on the basis of prescriptions of only authorized medical practitioners and that the stockists of these drugs must have been having proper drug license,” said the DSP at a press conference at the Mufassil police station on Tuesday. He had led the police team to conduct yesterday’s raid at Rai’s house.
Rai allegedly confessed to police that he engaged in illegal activity after losing his job owing to the closing of the school where he worked, followed by extreme poverty.
Notably, a vast section of people, mostly school and college students of the district both in rural and urban areas, are believed to have been addicted to these banned drugs at the cost of their health.
On previous occasions also, these banned drugs have been seized by the police but the contraband practice of its selling under a well-established network continues to take place.
Meanwhile, the main accused Rajesh Rai who happened to be a teacher in a local private school has been arrested whereas two others including Suraj Kumar Gupta and his wife Juli Gupta are absconding.
“Attempts to nab the absconding couple are on with suitable sections of the Narcotics and Psychotropic substances Act being imposed against them all,” the DSP added.
