Dumka, Dec 24: The Chairperson of the SC/ST committee of the Jharkhand assembly and JMM MLA from Borio Lobin Hembrom staged a dharna at the Town police station for a few hours on Friday for instituting an  FIR by a tribal girl student who was allegedly beaten up and locked inside her rented room by the landlord and hitherto had to run from pillar to post for the very purpose for over the last one month.

The victim girl Elizabeth Soren who also participated in the dharna along with hundreds of tribal students including girls, told reporters that she was severely beaten up by one Mohan Prasad Singh, the landlord of the house, she was staying on rent, on November 24 who also locked her inside the room till the evening.

She further stated that neither the Town police station nor the SC/ST police station lodged her complaint against the landlord in question having beaten her up black and blue causing swelling and bleeding in her mouth on the fateful day when the latter demanded Rs 50,000/ from her as caution money.

“I even approached Deputy Commissioner Ravishankar Shukla for justice but the cops of both the police stations paid no heed to his directive for lodging my FIR,” Elizabeth who studies in a local college and does a part-time job to meet the expenses.

Hembrom who had arrived at his Dumka-based residence this afternoon from the state capital, however, turned furious after listening to the plight of the victim tribal girl. He did not make any delay and rushed to the town police station along with the students and sat on dharna for nearly three hours.

Even senior police officials including the DSP Noor Mustafa pleaded ignorance about the plight of the victim girl who was contacted by Hembrom over the phone before reaching the town police station.

“This is what the police administration is functioning in the sub-capital here where even a tribal girl has to wander here and there for lodging an FIR pertaining to the physical assault and keeping her hostage inside her rented room,” Hembrom said adding the situation persists notwithstanding the fact that the SP Ambar Lakda himself belonged to the tribal community.

It was, however, after a high voltage drama at the Town police station that the accused landlord was arrested this evening following the lodging of the FIR afresh by the victim tribal girl.
