Earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolts central Philippines, no casualties

New Delhi, Feb 16: An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted the Masbate region of the central Philippines on Thursday. The strong and shallow quake took place shortly after 2:00 am (local time).

However, there were no immediate reports of damages or casualties, and no tsunami warning was issued.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 11 kilometres from the nearest village of Miaga, in Uson municipality, on the province’s main island of Masbate, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

As per infromation, the Masbate education department suspended classes for Thursday due to the continuous aftershocks being felt in the province.

Earlier this month, another 6.1 magnitude earthquake had hit a mountainous region in the southeastern Philippines.

On Wednesday, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale had hit New Zealand. The earthquake occurred 78 kilometres northwest of Lower Hutt.

Moreover, on Monday, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale had jolted Afghanistan’s Fayzabad.
