New Delhi, July 28: The Election Commission of India (ECI) declared on Thursday that anyone over the age of 17 no longer has to wait until they reach the legal voting age of 18 to apply for a voter card; instead, they may do it immediately.
Today, the Commission introduced a new model and said that young people in the nation will now have four opportunities per year to sign up as voters.
The Elections Commission of India (ECI), under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Shri Anup Chandra Pandey, instructed officials of all states to “work out tech-enabled solutions such that the youth” who have attained the age of 17 are facilitated to file their advance applications to get the voter card as they turn 18 years old.
Aside from January 1, ECI has announced three other qualifying dates: April 1, July 1, and October 1. Eligible minors can register in the qualifying quarter after turning 18 because the electoral roll will now be refreshed every three months.
Following the preparatory procedures, the applicants will be given an electoral photo identity card (EPIC). The registration forms have also been simplified and made more user-friendly by the Commission.
For the current round of yearly revisions to the electoral roll in 2023, the new method of voter card registration will also be available. However, the new advance application forms won’t be accessible until August 1.
