Kolkata, Feb 19: The kingpin in a cross-border smuggling racket, Mohammed Enamul Haque, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday in connection with the cattle smuggling case.
The hawala dealer was detained in West Bengal in connection with a money laundering case involving cattle smuggling across the India-Bangladesh border.
He will be produced before the Delhi Court in the afternoon.
Notably, Vinay Mishra, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, and his brother Vikas Mishra are also engaged in the case. In March 2021, the ED had detained Vikas and placed a lien on Vinay’s property. They were said to have received money from Haque through the Hawala Channel.
The CBI had also placed Haque under custody in November 2020. He was accused of bribing BSF officials so that his illicit livestock smuggling enterprise could continue to operate across the India-Bangladesh border.
The case of the ED is based on the CBI’s FIR. Enamul has already been charged by the CBI.
