Mumbai, Feb 23: The Enforcement Directorate is questioning Maharashtra minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Nawab Malik in connection with a money laundering case involving underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. For questioning, the minister was summoned to the ED’s Ballard Estate headquarters in South Mumbai. Outside the ED office, security has been beefed up.
The ED conducted searches at numerous places last week in connection with the same money-laundering case that the ED has recently taken up based on a case filed by the NIA. The residence of late Haseena Parkar, Dawood’s sister, was also searched in connection with the money laundering case.
The NIA filed a money laundering complaint against Dawood, while the ED filed an Enforcement Case Information Report.
Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena MP, claimed that the BJP is using its agencies against Maharashtra ministers who speak out against them.
“Nawab Malik has been continuously speaking against injustice and unmasking them. So, they are letting the ED after such people. Malik is a cabinet minister and ED officials have picked him up for questioning, and I think this is a challenge for Maharashtra. We are confident that he would be back home by evening,” Raut said.
In connection with the same case, the ED has taken custody of Dawood’s brother, Iqbal Kaskar. So far, investigations have established that Kaskar used the name of Dawood to extort money from celebrities and builders.
