Chennai, July 17: In a money laundering case connected to alleged illegal mining, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at numerous locations on Monday at multiple premises of DMK politician and Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy and his MP son Gautham Sigamani Pon, official sources said.
The employees of the federal investigation agency searched the property in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act’s (PMLA) guidelines, escorted by armed members of the CRPF.
The authorities are conducting raids at the residences of the father-son duo in the state capital Chennai and in Villupuram, which is considered a stronghold of Ponmudy, they said.
The money laundering case is connected to alleged irregularities that occurred between 2007 and 2011 when Ponmudy served as the state’s mining minister. There were claims of quarry licence requirements being broken, which resulted in a loss to the exchequer of roughly Rs 28 crore.
