South 24 Parganas, West Bengal: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has unearthed a sprawling two-story bungalow belonging to former RG Kar Medical College principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, during its investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the renowned Kolkata institution. The discovery was made during a raid in Canning, located in South 24 Parganas district.

The opulent property, known as ‘Sangeetasandip Villa,’ is named after Dr. Ghosh and his wife, Sangeeta Ghosh, according to local sources. The bungalow is situated amidst hundreds of acres of vacant land, and locals often refer to it as “Doctor Babu’s house,” frequently spotting the couple visiting with family members.

Residents in the area have claimed that Dr. Ghosh has been involved in buying large portions of land and constructing several farmhouses around the property. These claims are part of a larger narrative surrounding Ghosh’s alleged misuse of funds during his tenure at RG Kar Medical College.

The ED’s raids are part of a broader investigation into financial misconduct at RG Kar, following allegations of corruption and wastage of government resources. The raids, which took place at multiple locations in Kolkata and its suburbs, targeted Ghosh’s properties and those of his relatives. The investigation was prompted by a series of complaints filed against the former principal.

Dr. Ghosh is currently in CBI custody, having been arrested earlier this month along with three of his associates in connection with the case. The ED has lodged an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against Ghosh, which functions similarly to an FIR in criminal investigations.

The case stems from accusations made by Dr. Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent at RG Kar Medical College. Dr. Ali alleged that Ghosh was involved in several corrupt activities, including the misappropriation of funds, nepotism in recruitment, and irregularities in vendor selection. He also suggested that the corruption might be connected to the tragic death of a trainee doctor, who was reportedly aware of the illegal practices at the hospital.

Adding to Dr. Ghosh’s legal troubles, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed his plea challenging a Calcutta High Court ruling. Ghosh had sought to be added as a party to the corruption case, but the court ruled that as an accused, he had no legal standing to intervene in the proceedings.

The ED continues its investigation, and further developments are expected as they probe deeper into the financial mismanagement at RG Kar Medical College.
