New Delhi, June 1: The Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi were summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday over the National Herald issue, which the Congress maintains was closed by the investigating agency in 2015.
“Started the National Herald newspaper in 1942, at that time the British tried to suppress it, today Modi govt is also doing the same & ED is being used for this. ED has given notice to our president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi,” said Congress leader Randeep Surjewala.
The National Herald case pertains to the alleged misuse of assets worth over 2,000 crore in an equity transaction.
The Gandhis were served with the notice a few days ago. In April, the ED interrogated former Union minister Pawan Bansal and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge in connection with the National Herald money laundering investigation.
In the instance of the acquisition of the Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which ran the Congress mouthpiece, National Herald, by Young Indian Pvt Ltd, accusations of cheating, conspiracy, and criminal breach of trust have been levelled.
