Elon Musk on Saturday announced the formation of a new political outfit, the ‘America Party,’ in a move aimed at challenging the traditional two-party system in the United States. The announcement, which follows a public fallout with his former ally President Donald Trump, has fueled widespread speculation about his political ambitions, despite being constitutionally barred from running for president.
Constitutional Hurdle and Election Hints
While the launch has ignited discussions about a potential 2028 presidential run, Musk is ineligible for the nation’s highest office. Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution requires presidential candidates to be “natural-born citizens,” which disqualifies the South Africa-born tech billionaire. Musk himself has previously acknowledged this, stating, “I cannot be president because of my African birth.” Despite this, when asked on his social media platform X about his new party’s election plans with the options “Midterms or 2028?”, Musk gave a cryptic one-word reply: “Next year.” This has added to the confusion surrounding his ultimate political goals.
Fallout with Trump and ‘Uniparty’ Push
The formation of the ‘America Party’ comes after a strained period in Musk’s relationship with President Trump, largely over a massive spending bill that Musk heavily criticized. The launch was preceded by a July 4th poll on X, where Musk asked his followers if they wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” After receiving an overwhelmingly positive response, Musk declared, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
