Los Angeles: Debbie Nelson, the mother of legendary rapper Eminem, passed away on December 2 at the age of 69 due to complications related to lung cancer, according to a report by People. Nelson’s representative confirmed her death.
Born in 1955, Nelson married Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. at the age of 16. Two years later, she gave birth to her son, Marshall Mathers III, who would rise to fame as Eminem. Their relationship was often tumultuous, with Eminem reflecting on their struggles in his music, most notably in the 2002 track “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” which led Nelson to file a defamation lawsuit against him for USD 11 million.
In a 2008 interview, Nelson expressed hope for reconciliation, stating, “It’s a matter of swallowing your pride… It’s over, it’s done. You need to move on.” Speculation about their mended relationship arose in 2013 when Eminem released the song “Headlights,” which many interpreted as an apology.
In recent years, Nelson supported Eminem from a distance. She publicly congratulated him on his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, saying, “Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you on your induction.”
Nelson is survived by her sons, Eminem and Nathan Mathers.
