New Delhi, Sept 9: Queen Elizabeth II, who ruled Britain for the longest time, passed away on Thursday. When she passed away, Charles, the heir-to-be and former Prince of Wales, immediately ascended to the throne.

Charles has spent the majority of his life preparing for the throne. At 73 years old, that time has finally come. The Accession Council will formally appoint King Charles III as the new ruler on Saturday.

The oldest British royal to ever ascend to the throne is Charles. For comparison’s sake, his mother Elizabeth became queen at the age of 26. He will rule the UK and 14 other nations, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, after being crowned.

Charles, the first child of Elizabeth, then a princess, and Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was born at the royal estate in Sandringham on November 14, 1948.

When his grandfather King George VI passed away and his mother Elizabeth ascended to the throne as Queen of Britain in 1952, Charles, who had previously been a princeling, became the heir apparent at the age of three. When he received the title of Prince of Wales, he was nine years old.

He automatically assumed the titles of Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland because he was the monarch’s first son.

He was formally installed as Prince of Wales on July 1, 1969. Diana Spencer and Charles were married in the summer of 1981. Most royal watchers agree that Charles and Diana’s marriage was a very unhappy one. In 1996, the couple finally filed for divorce amid graphic media headlines and accusations of reciprocal infidelity.

Diana and her boyfriend Dodi al-Fayed died in car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Charles married Camilla Parker-Bowles in April 2005, eight years later, and she became the Duchess of Cornwall. When her son assumes power, Queen Elizabeth stated earlier this year that she would prefer Camilla to be referred to as “queen consort.”
