Ex-Captain Dilip Tirkey files nomination for Hockey India President’s post

New Delhi, Sept 18: Dilip Tirkey, a former Olympian and captain of India, submitted his application on Sunday for the position of Hockey India (HI) president. Tirkey declared his intention to elevate the sport after filing his nomination paperwork.

“Submitted my nomination for the post of President, Hockey India with the blessings of all. I am committed to take Indian Hockey to new heights,” Tirkey posted on his official Twitter handle.

One of the three Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidates, 44-year-old Tirkey, a former full-back, was elected to the Rajya Sabha without opposition.

He has previously served as the head of the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation. He is currently the head of the Odisha Hockey Promotion Council. Tirkey was a member of the Indian teams that took home the gold and silver medals from the Asian Games in 1998 in Bangkok and 2012 in Busan, respectively.

Additionally, he earned a bronze in 1999 along with two gold medals at the Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur in 2003 and Chennai in 2007.

Ajay Nayak, a former electoral official in the Bihar government, has been named as the returning officer for the Hockey India elections, which are set to take place on October 9.
