New Delhi: World Cup-winning former India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani has voiced strong disappointment over the conduct witnessed during the Asia Cup 2025, saying the tournament was overshadowed by politics and provocative gestures rather than the spirit of cricket. Kirmani remarked that he felt “ashamed” hearing international friends describe the event as a disgrace to the game.
Criticism of On-Field Gestures and Trophy Controversy
Kirmani took particular issue with the provocative actions by Pakistan players during matches against India, as well as India’s refusal to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council chief and Pakistan minister Mohsin Naqvi after the final in Dubai. The unusual scene, in which officials carried away the trophy after Naqvi exited the ceremony, stunned fans worldwide. “By and large, there has been no gentlemanness in the game. Very rude, arrogant gestures on the field… What has happened at the Asia Cup is disgusting,” he said.
Nostalgia for Past India-Pakistan Camaraderie
The veteran recalled earlier eras when India-Pakistan cricket was defined by hospitality and mutual respect. “Pakistani players coming into India, we going into Pakistan — what hospitality, what love, what affection. Exchanging pleasantries, families meeting at parties. Where is that now? The total scenario from our time to this era is absolutely depressing,” he added.
Politics Should Stay Away From Sports
Kirmani emphasized that politics should never be allowed to intrude into sporting arenas. “Whatever has transpired away from the sporting field, leave it there itself. Cricket should not be used for such things,” he stated. While India secured their ninth Asia Cup title, he warned that the 2025 edition would be remembered more for its controversies than its cricketing brilliance.
