New Delhi: Umar Khalid, former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader, has been granted seven-day interim bail by a city court in connection with a “larger conspiracy” case tied to the 2020 Delhi riots.
The interim bail, sanctioned to allow Mr. Khalid to attend a family wedding, comes with the condition that he must return to jail once the granted period ends.
Despite several attempts, the former student leader has repeatedly been denied regular bail. He was arrested in September 2020, seven months after the riots that led to 53 deaths and left over 700 injured.
The violence erupted amidst protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Mr. Khalid has been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), with the police alleging that he was one of the key conspirators behind the riots.
