A day after presenting a letter to the president demonstrating the support of 169 members of the 275-member House of Representatives, Prachanda took the oath of office as prime minister of Nepal.
Notably, Prachanda spent almost ten years in hiding before entering the political mainstream when the CPN-Maoist embraced peaceful politics, putting an end to a ten-year armed insurrection.
With 89 seats in the House of Representatives, the Nepali Congress is the largest party in the nation. The CPN-UML and CPN-MC have 78 and 32 seats, respectively.
As required by Article 76(4) of the Constitution, Prachanda must now prevail in a vote of confidence from the lower house within 30 days after winning the position of prime minister with an overwhelming majority.
